Fewer Suspensions, More Chaos? The Unintended Consequences of Discipline Overhauls

Fewer Suspensions, More Chaos? The Unintended Consequences of Discipline Overhauls

In April 2025, a disturbing video surfaced from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. High School in DeKalb County, Georgia, of a physical altercation between a student and a teacher. The footage, which quickly went viral, showed a student striking a teacher, who then retaliated. As security personnel intervened, other students became involved in the fray. This incident has prompted a comprehensive review of discipline policies within the DeKalb County School District.

The fight occurred in a school hallway and was captured on video, rapidly spreading across social media. In response, three students were suspended, and further disciplinary actions are pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation. Additionally, the teacher involved has been placed on administrative leave.

Superintendent Dr. Devon Horton addressed the incident, emphasizing the complexity of the situation. He noted that the video did not capture the events leading up to the confrontation, stating, “To be honest, this was not as cut and dry as what the video showed.” Dr. Horton expressed his support for both students and staff, and indicated there was a need for accountability coupled with compassion.

In the wake of the incident, DeKalb County Schools are reassessing their discipline policies. The district has been implementing restorative practices, de-escalation techniques, and programs like Face Advocates, which pair mentors with students exhibiting behavioral challenges.

Dr. Horton reported a significant decrease in suspensions, with 4,400 fewer suspensions this school year compared to the last. He emphasized the importance of these initiatives, stating, “Students don’t fail, systems fail.”

The incident has sparked concern among parents and community members. Ebony, a parent of a sophomore at the school, expressed her dismay, saying, “It shouldn’t have happened.” Despite the incident, she remains committed to supporting the school and advocating for positive change.

The incident at DeKalb County’s MLK High School serves as a reminder of the complexities surrounding school discipline. It shows the necessity for policies that are not only reactive but also preventative. Reducing suspension numbers is not enough. Schools must ensure that behaviors driving the suspensions are actually being addressed. And while schools play a vital role in shaping student success, accountability must not disappear.

Through comprehensive training, policy development, and mentorship programs, schools can create environments where students thrive, and educators are equipped to handle challenges effectively. Dr. Horton said: “Students don’t fail, systems fail.” This is just not true.  Yes, students do fail.  When they do, we must hold them accountable.
